I call upon the vast knowledge pool of Opponauts to settle a rather pointless discussion for me. Can a 1998 Accord be started while the transmission is in drive?

No. At least, my 1993 didn’t. You could start it in Neutral, though.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say no - there’s a lockout. Should start in neutral, I think ....

Should start in neutral, but I don’t think you can start it in D.

You gotta start before putting the D in position.

Unlikely. I know my Benz can’t, and it’s a decade older. It’s common practice to start only in neutral or park - which of course takes bump-starting (already uncommon to be possible in an auto) completely out of the picture.

I’ve never had an auto that could be started in drive.

My 2000 Civic could not. My 2000 Logo can’t. I’m gonna go with no.

Doubtful. Unless something is broke internally, then maybe.

No, because the car would likely surge forward (or reverse if you could try R) stupid people likely did that in the old days which is why there is a Park-Neutral safety switch.

hmm... I THINK there is a key insert thing in the auto shifter to let you override lockouts.

Oh yeah, I just wanted to confirm that a 1998 model Accord wasn’t pre-lockout.

That won’t let you start it in D though, it just lets you move the shifter without turning the key and hitting the brake. Used for moving the car when it’s inoperable, i.e. putting it on a flatbed.

I’ve never owned a car made before 1972, so I can’t answer that.

My ‘62 Mercury had a lockout for the auto trans, so it has been a very long time since you could start an auto-trans vehicle in gear.
